Inspiring Those Who Aspire To Be

2020/21 Season

The unprecedented 2020/21 league cricket season has come to an end. Who would have thought that we would have some semblance of a season in the dark days of the lockdown that was in place a year ago?

For this we must thank the management of the club for getting us back on the field at the earliest possible opportunity and the Central Gauteng Lions under the leadership of Jono Leaf-Wright for pushing CSA to allow us to have at least half a formal season. In this respect we were unique in the country.

At its annual awards ceremony, held on the new deck at Chariots, the cricket section was able to celebrate the achievements of the season and thank those that made it happen.

  • To the sponsors – New Africa Sports, BMW Sandton, Molefi Letsiki Diamond Holdings, Nungu Diamonds – without whom we would have had significant financial constraints.
  • To the coaches – Jeff Levin, Kreeson Naicker, Graham McMillan, Craig Taylor and the junior coaches.
  • To the team captains and committee members for all their work behind the scenes.
  • Most importantly the cricket section thanks its players without whom there would be no Wanderers Cricket Club. Cricket membership has actually grown during the pandemic. Players have remained committed to the club and, perhaps more importantly, continued to pay their subscriptions when the club has really needed them.

Three CGL league trophies were secured – one more than last season.

  • Women’s Premier
  • Saturday 2
  • Saturday 3 (again!)

The most pleasing trophy is the Women’s Premier League – only 3 years after the section was restarted. A great deal of credit for this must go to Shannon Landman-Kriel, who unfortunately had to leave us. But, under the guidance of Maddy Wolmarans and Graham McMillan, women’s cricket at the Wanderers has gone from strength to strength.

Congratulations also go to Josh Richards and Kirstie Thomson for their selections for the emerging SA teams. And Dom Hendricks for his multiple awards, including Players’ Player, at the recent CGL end of season awards.
