Sport – A healthy Lifestyle for the family
The benefits of family time are fairly obvious. Strong family bonds are essential for kids' social and emotional development, and for everyone’s well-being, adults and children. But especially as kids grow, it becomes harder and harder to fit in that important family time. Shared meals can help you bond (even if they don’t end up happening at supper time), and so can physical activity.
Sharing activity with your family isn’t just a good way to get your heart pumping and burn calories. It’s also a great way to build family bonds and ties.
When the whole family is more physically active together, everyone benefits from helping to maintain a healthy weight, reducing stress and lowering the risks of heart disease and other serious conditions.
Sport is one of the best ways to get and stay fit because quite simply it’s so enjoyable. Depending on which sport you participate in, most of the muscle groups get a solid workout!
Another great benefit of including sport into your family time is the opportunity it provides to network with other families. This can help with building a positive community of parents whilst encouraging new friendships for the kids.
Physical activity is so important that generally we schedule time for it. Not often enough, however, do we consider making time to exercise as a family. Let’s look briefly at the key benefits to family exercise time.
Encourage Good Habits
We’re all aware of adolescent obesity. From keeping healthy snacks around the home to encouraging more active play, parents tend to work hard at keeping their kids healthy. By using family time to do a physical activity together you are encouraging your child to exercise. Furthermore, you are helping to build lifelong habits.
Family Bonding Time
These days many families describe themselves as being too busy with work, school and after school activities. So, when it comes to family bonding, it often consists of movies or games to relax and unwind. It doesn’t always however include conversation or working together as a team. Physical activity and sports, on the other hand, foster an environment of teamwork and communication-two important skills for a child’s development. Whether it’s a few hoops of basketball or a game of Padel, you're encouraging the opportunity to converse and work together as a family.
Opportunities for Encouragement.
There is no replacement for active encouragement during family time. Good family bonding paired with positive family encouragement helps build confidence and self-esteem across all age groups. Furthermore, participating from both parents and kids in activities provide a sense of growth and ownership.
Teamwork
Teamwork amongst kids is not generally promoted at home, rather at school or in a sports setting. If not encouraged at home, it’s not likely to become a lifelong habit. By exercising together, teamwork is encouraged and working together to achieve a common goal. Not only does this help strengthen family bonds and ties, but it also helps teach the importance of goal setting and accomplishment both as an individual and as a team.
