The Wanderers Club in Illovo will launch a new variation to Badminton on 20th November 2021. AirBadminton, developed by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), is designed to create an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to participate in outdoor sports. It can be played on different surfaces including hard surfaces, grass and sand, and in parks, gardens, streets, playgrounds and beaches. It is already being played around the world.
AirBadminton can be played by anyone, regardless of age, ability and level of experience. It is also an inclusive sport for people with disabilities and para-badminton players.
Research shows that AirBadminton can prevent stress, reduce the risk of myopia in children and is a healthy, active and safe sport for all.
This exciting sport can be played on rectangular and symmetric areas with two meters of ‘dead’ zone each side of the net. If the AirShuttle touches the ground on this area, it’s a fault.
The equipment required to play AirBadminton includes rackets (the same as a traditional badminton racket), and a specific shuttle (AirShuttle). It is possible to play AirBadminton with an existing shuttlecock, but the game and court have been specially developed based on the characteristics of the AirShuttle itself, which is designed to make it easy to play outdoors and racquets are typically strung to 24 pounds as opposed to 30 pounds for a traditional Badminton racket.
The Wanderers Club will be officially launching the new sport on 20th November at 08:00 on the top cricket oval. Come join us to be amongst the first people to experience this exciting new sporting variant. There will be professional players showcasing their abilities and Shuttlecocks will be on sale on the day.
