Tournament News:

Once again, The “SA Nationals” is being played at our courts as I write this (24th -30th June). Naturally, this results in some disruption to our regular players, but the pride of being the venue of choice by Squash SA is worth the inconvenience.  Furthermore, the level of squash exhibited is a welcome advertisement for the game and an encouragement to our own Members to achieve these standards.

The Jarvis Cup is being held in Pretoria this year (10th – 14th July) and a number of overseas players will be taking part.  Our own Leon Gelderblom (of Bull Ring fame) has organised for Mohamed El Sherbini (Egypt), who won the PSA portion of the Bull Ring Tournament, to play an exhibition match against Farres Dessouky, currently ranked No. 9 in the PSA.  Please come along to the courts on Saturday 15th July at 11:00 – 17:00 to see some top flight squash.

And then, as if this wasn’t enough excitement, Squash SA have resurrected the long-forgotten SA Open Tournament which hasn’t been played since 1995.  And yes, it will be held at Wanderers from the 17th – 21st July.  Squash SA have at last found a Sponsor for both the Nationals and the SA Open, in the guise of “GrowthPoint Properties”.  This has enabled Squash SA to put up prize money of R200k for these events, which will hopefully stir some of the old dogs into swinging a racket again!

We will post the results of these 2 tournaments in next month’s news.
