Last month Dave Grant announced his resignation as Chairman of the Wanderers Squash Club. Dave is relocating to “The Land of His Fathers” and hopes to take up residence in Cardiff in the near future.
I have been asked to take up the position of Chairman at least until the next AGM of the squash club. I am looking forward to supporting the club in this role and I intend to maintain the momentum that Dave started several years ago. I would like to thank Dave on behalf of the club members for his dedication and involvement in the social and tournament events. I would also like to personally thank Dave for supporting my efforts in developing kids from Alexandra township in the game of squash.
Dave, from all of us here “Pob lwc” and “Araf deg mae mynd ymhell”!
Wanderers are fielding six teams in the Gauteng League this year – one in each of the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 9th leagues and two in the 8th league. The season has now reached the halfway point and as we go into the winter break the standings are looking good.
Well done to everyone up there in the top positions and good luck to everybody when games recommence at the end of July.
Squash Masters players (aged 35 years and above) are getting excited about two upcoming events. Firstly the 2018 WSF World Masters Squash Championships being held in Charlottesville, Virginia at the end of July and secondly the SA Masters IPT Squash Tournament to be held in East London in September.
802 players from around the world have entered the World Masters, of which 72 are from South Africa. A team of 15 players have been chosen to represent South Africa in the tournament. I am pleased to announce that Sheena Worwood from the Wanderers Club will be representing South Africa in the 70-74 age group. Several other players from Wanderers are entering the competition as individuals and we wish everybody the best of luck.
Sports Shop at the Squash Centre:
The sports shop has recently changed ownership and I would like to welcome Peter Dickson and his team from Baseline Rackets to the club grounds. Peter is a competent and experienced racket re-stringer and is keen to service the requirements of the various sub-clubs. He can be contacted on 083 271 0571 if there is nobody in attendance at the shop.
The weekly coaching sessions are continuing on Tuesday afternoons up until 17 July, after which I shall be away for a month at the World Masters Squash Championships. I have been receiving assistance from our Club Manager, Gary Plumstead, and Brent Williams of The Sports Trust. If any of the club members are available to assist with coaching from 24 July to 15 August we might be able to continue the coaching sessions in my absence.
