Please be aware that as the squash season picks up speed, the courts will get more booked up, so don’t pitch-up without pre-booking and expect there to be free courts. Additionally, the Thusong Youth Club has switched their Wednesday sessions to Mondays on the backcourts, so what was a reasonably quiet night has become quite busy at prime time.
The wait was worth it. The Bull Ring Tournament was held at our courts during the first week of May. The Organiser, Leon Gelderblom had been hatching this event since November 2016, and he managed to achieve the biggest Professional Squash Association event ever in SA. Together with Phil Louw from our Committee and Ria Kennerley, they attracted 232 players from 14 different countries spanning South Korea in the East to Namibia in the West, and from Latvia in the North to Cape Town in the South. The professionalism extended to the use of top Referees headed by Mike Collins, an international referee of considerable standing.
The event comprised separate categories, namely, Juniors (Boys & Girls), Men’s & Women’s Open, Over 45’s, and the main PSA event for professional squash players.
The standard of squash was a joy to behold and was a huge incentive for all our development players from our in-house crew the Thusong Youth Club, and from Egoli Squash, run out of Braamfontein.
The Results were:
PSA Men: Mohamed El Sherbini (Egypt)
PSA Women: Menna Hamed (Egypt)
Men’s Open: Rodney Durbach (SA)
Women’s Open: Diana Haynes (SA)
Over 45: Donald Davidson (SA)
Boys: John Kuhn (SA)
Girls: Panashe Sithole (SA)
As if the Bull Ring wasn’t enough excitement, two weeks later we had the World Champion squash player, namely, Karim Gawad playing some of South Africa’s top male squash players as a fund-raiser for JP Brits & Christo Potgeiter to go overseas and play in professional tournaments to advance their World Squash ratings.
Karim was an endearing personality who played against some of our development players and gave some good insight into his life via off-court interviews. Supersport were there to film the event and we can look forward to our Club being on telly.
