Inspiring Those Who Aspire To Be

Tennis is coming out strong again!

The last two years have been tough on all the clubs’ social sports. Fortunately for tennis, it allows natural social distancing and was allowed to continue, with certain restrictions, during the Covid period.

The tennis section introduced a new concept that encourages social tennis interaction namely the “ Wanderers Internal League”.

A pilot program ran in 2020 and was adopted as the system used to run the 2021 Club Championships.

The Internal League uses an app that runs a “round robin” type event as opposed to the conventional knockout event used in Club Championships.

This system allows for a lot more tennis to be played during the year, between leagues organized by Gauteng Central.

Larry Gresham. Wanderers 2021 Men’s singles Champion. He beat Rowan Batzofin 6/0 7/5 in the Men’s Final.

Our Social tennis has picked up as well with Thursday evening proving to be very popular under the supervision of Lucas Liepner. He adds an element of fun by posting a weekly video taken during play each Thursday.

Saturday Social also sees around 20 players every week.

The Feb 2022 Egoli league is almost done with all 6 teams achieving success in their respective divisions. Our men’s first teams are in Premier B league while the ladies play in First League section 1.

Results soon to be published.

On the coaching front, former Springbok and Davis Cup player, Renier Moolman takes over as Head Coach at the Wanderers Tennis Academy while his predecessor and founder of the Academy, Howard Espley-Jones steps down into a more administrative position as director of tennis.
