Wanderers Squash Club 2021 Club Champion
An exciting evening of squash took place on Tuesday 23 November when the last round of the Club Championships took place at the Wanderers Squash Club.
13 matches took place to determine the Club Champion, the Runner-Up, the Plate winner and the Shield winner. Every match was hard-fought and kept the audience enthralled throughout the evening.
The matches on the glass court leading up to the Championship Final just added to the excitement with Ross Purbrick and “Mo” Rahman fighting it out in five games for the third and fourth positions.
The four Development players impressed the audience, winning all their final round matches.
Bandile Machava beat Ross Matthews 3-1 to take the Plate position.
Bongani Machava and Kyaran Pillay took 11th & 12th positions after a hard-fought five-setter.
Ashley Modiba beat Johnathan Houston 3-2 to take positions 21 & 22 and Johnny Mogala beat Wayne Bennett 3-2, taking positions 25 & 26.
The Club Champs Shield was fought over by six players with Mark Tessendorff winning overall with 15 points, followed closely by Gareth Murray with 12 points.
Of course, the match everybody had been waiting for was between Phil Louw and Bruce Young. There were high expectations for Bruce (runner-up in 2017 and 2020 and Club Champ in 2019) to beat Phil, a three-time winner in 2016, 2018 and 2020 and runner-up in 2019.
Phil took the first two games and looked to be set to take the match. However, Bruce recovered and took games three and four bringing the match to 2-all. The fifth game provided the audience with the entertainment expected of a Club Champs Final with PHIL LOUW eventually taking the fifth game to win the match and become The Wanderers Club Champion for the fourth time.
The winning awards were presented by outgoing Wanderers Squash Chairman Chris Hughes and Chairman for 2022, Dino Petrarolo.
- Club Champion 2021 – Phil Louw
- Runner-up – Bruce Young
- Plate – Bongani Machava
- Shield – Mark Tessendorff
