Central Gauteng Squash 2019 League Awards
The end‑of‑season annual CGS League Awards evening was held on Wednesday 20 November, attended by league winners and guests. The Wanderers Squash Club proudly received awards for top positions in the 4th and 8th leagues. Having fielded seven league teams in 2019 and, hopefully, seven or eight in 2020 we are looking forward to achieving some wins again next year.

Members of The Wanderers Squash 8th & 4th League teams together with Phil Louw (Wanderers League rep.) and Gary Plumstead (Court Manager and Coach).
- Wanderers 8th League represented by Clive Lacy, Kyran Pillay and Allan Lai.
- Wanderers 4th League represented by Johnny Fiandeiro, JP Strydom and Mike Sissison.

The Wanderers Squash Club Championships
The final of The Wanderers Squash Club Championships was played on Tuesday 29 October. Bruce Young and Phil Louw battled it out in the final with Bruce Young winning 16/14 in the fifth game. Mo Rahman took third position and Mike Sissison beat Keith Willows to win the Plate Final.
Planet Fitness Fourways Challenge Match
On Wednesday 6 November Wanderers SC hosted Planet Fitness Fourways to a night of squash. 30 matches were played with Planet Fitness winning the encounter by 2 games. Wanderers SC will be hoping for revenge in 2020.
Dave Grant Doubles & Century Doubles Tournament
The Wanderers’ Dave Grant Doubles tournament was held on 16 November. This was combined with a “Century Doubles” competition in which the combined ages of the players had to exceed 100.
Bruce Young & Ganesh Shenoy won the doubles tournament with Johnny Fiandeiro & JP Strydom in second place. “Youngsters” Dino Petrarola & Francois v/d Merwe won the Century Doubles competition (narrowly meeting the age requirement by seven years!). Unfortunately, the skill and experience gained from the combined age of 130 years didn’t help Chris Hughes & Mish Wentzel to win more than one game in the whole tournament!
Forthcoming Activities
The “Movember” Tournament will be held on 30 November to raise funds for cancer research and the Thusong Squash Development programme.
This brings us to the end of the squash season for 2019. Please remind family and friends that the courts will be open to members throughout December and the holiday periods. Due to an unfortunate incident of a breach of security in The Wanderers Club’s computers it has not been possible to re‑activate every member’s access cards. If you are having trouble with your access card please contact Glenda on 011 788 5012 or [email protected].
Thank you to all members for participating in the events throughout the year and keeping the squash club active. I trust you will all have an enjoyable and safe festive season and we’ll see you all back in the new year.
Chris Hughes.
Chairman – Wanderers Squash Club.
