The Wanderers Pre Season squash tournament was held over the weekend of 9th and 10th of March. The event was well attended by 27 entrants ranging from young to old and novice to 1st League level players. Gary Plumstead, our resident coach and Court Manager won the event, beating Sylvester Mabote in the final after a brilliant display of top-quality squash. Bongani Machava, one of the Thusong Development players, won the plate by beating the Club Chairman, Chris Hughes, 3-2. (Chris puts it down to good coaching)!
An Open Day was held on Saturday the 9th of March to promote club membership and the game of squash in general. This was well supported by Subaru Bryanston and visitors enjoyed games on the all-glass court, trying their hand at the inflatable court and finishing the day off with a “boerie roll” on the veranda of the Spinners Bar.
Weekly coaching sessions for the kids from Alexandra township continue at the Wanderers Club on Tuesday afternoons. Two of the high performing players, Bongani Machava and Ashley Modiba, had a pleasant surprise when they were invited to attend a personalized coaching session with 2010 World No. 1 player Nick Matthew.
Thanks to the Wanderers Main Club, the front walls of Courts 1 and 3 have now been repaired in time for the league season.
Gauteng League and Gauteng Masters League has kicked off for the 2019 season. The Wanderers teams got off to a slow start in the first week but all the players are motivated to pick up their games in the coming weeks.
