July Bell Tournament

wanderers club Squash News July 2022 3

The Wanderers Squash Club ran another successful round-robin Bell tournament on the 6th of July.  Ten players participated and Allan Lai and Kyaran Pillay showed off their skills to win the most games and most points respectively.

These tournaments are run on an ad-hoc basis; look out in the social media for notice of the next event.

Squash Development

Ophethile Mojapelo joined the Thusong Squash Development programme in 2015 as a novice 14 year-old, training with up to 14 other youngsters from Alexandra township at The Wanderers Squash Club.  Now in her third year at the University of Johannesburg studying accounting she was chosen to join the UJ squash team to play in the 2022 USSA Squash Championships at Rhodes University in Mkhanda (Grahamstown).

Ophethile (seen on the far right of the picture) won several of her games, finishing in third position in the Women’s C Section singles.

Ophethile continues to train at The Wanderers and occasionally takes part in the Ladies league events at The Wanderers.  We are hoping to see her possibly joining The Wanderers in the future and adding to our pool of talent in the league matches.

Ladies League

The Wanderers Club was represented in three of the Ladies League divisions in the first half of this year’s season.  Kalinka Faul is currently in second position in Division B1, Chloe Dugger played in Division C1 and Shizuha Hatori played in Division C2.

Unfortunately, Chloe Dugger will not be available for the rest of the season due to the wonderful news that she is expecting a youngster later in the year.  Congratulations to Chloe and best wishes for many future years of enjoyment.

Sadly, Shizuha Hatori had to also pull out of the tournament as she had to return to Japan to attend to her terminally ill father. Our condolences go out to Shizuha and her family.

Joburg Masters League

The Wanderers A & B 2nd League Masters teams are currently at positions five and four respectively.  The C team playing in the 4th League are in position eight.

Joburg Mens League

The Wanderers fielded six teams in the Joburg Mens League this year; one team each in Reserve, 3rd, 4th and 6th and two teams in the 5th league.  Results have been a bit mixed in the first half of the season but we’re hoping that now everyone is back to playing regular squash after the Covid hiatus we might see some improved results in the second half.

The Wanderers is proud to have three of its current squash members playing in the tournament; Phil Louw (40-44 age group), Dino Petrarolo (55-59) and Chris Hughes (65-69).

In addition, the squash club’s past chairman, Dave Grant, has entered the 70-74 group and a previous club member, Bruce Macmillan, has entered the 45-49 group. Both of these players have relocated to the UK but will be playing under the South Africa flag.

I’m sure the players will get the full support of The Wanderers Squash Club members in this prestigious tournament.  Details of the event can be found at:
