It is with great sadness that I have to start off the 2017 Snooker year with the devastating news that our old friend and fellow snooker player, John Fisher, had passed away at the end of January this year. John was a long-standing member of CGSA and the Wanderers Snooker section and a very enthusiastic social player, as well as a regular supporter of all the snooker events hosted at the club. His friendly demeanour and competitiveness will be sorely missed by his fellow social, as well as league players and we will treasure all the wonderful memories he has left behind.
The 2017 Snooker season is upon us and we wish to start the season off by welcoming our new players, as well as some old faces, who have come back to Wanderers and CGSA Snooker. We have yet another packed season ahead of us and we would like to invite all interested players to come and see what snooker at Wanderers is all about and enjoy this lovely game with us.
The 2017 Central Gauteng Snooker Association AGM took place on Thursday, the 26th of January 2017 at the Wanderers Club and we held the 2016 Awards Ceremony at the same time. Congratulations go to everybody who performed well during the last season, both locally and at provincial level. You guys truly make us proud to be part of Central Gauteng Snooker.
The Gauteng Snooker Association season will kick off with the annual Jannie Smuts Committee tournament, where teams made up of committee members from the various GSA provinces, compete for the title. Central Gauteng has a very proud history of being undefeated at this event since inception. Good luck on continuing this proud record boys.
The Central Gauteng Snooker Association League fixtures start on the 6th of March 2017, but CGSA will be kicking the season off with the “2017 Johannesburg & Districts” tournament which will be played from the 20th of February 2017. Our next newsletter will include the results from this prestigious event. The early date for this event serves as a good kick-off to the season and will hopefully get everybody in the right frame of mind at the start of a very competitive season for 2017. Our Premier League fixtures will be split up between Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. As soon as the completed league fixtures are available, we will post it on the Wanderers website and you will be able to follow the season’s matches.
All team registrations MUST also ensure that the team members are current Wanderers members as well, as you will not be able to participate if you do not have a valid membership card. We also urge you to please ensure that your membership card is pre-loaded with money for lights if you wish to benefit from members rates; otherwise the system cannot function properly on league nights, or during practice.
Central Gauteng and the Wanderers Club will again be hosting just about all the SA National events for the year. These include the SA Singles, SA 6 Reds, SA Masters and SA Interprovincial Championships. We look forward to bringing you the up-to-date results and news on these and other events as the 2017 season progresses and I once again urge anybody who is interested to come and watch some of the fantastic snooker played by our top players.
Yours in Snooker
