The SA Interprovincials, SA Classic, SA Pairs and SA Billiards Championships took place at Q-Masters Centre in KwaZulu-Natal from 13 – 21 September 2019. The SA Inter-Provincial championships, the last of our big national events, is contested by teams representing all the provinces across the country.
The following players from Central Gauteng were selected to represent the province in the various divisions:
The Premier team consisted of:
• Elvin Harris
• Rafique Limbada
• Adnan Muhammed
The A-Division First team consisted of:
• Adeel Umair
• Mahammed Atif
• Aadil Mohammed
The A-Division Second team consisted of:
• Kumaran Govender
• Brandon Surajlall
• Shezad Memon
The B division was extremely tough with some very strong teams in the division. We saw some excellent games and snooker of a very high standard for the B-division. The team from Cape Winelands proved too strong for the rest of the field though and ended up winning the division. The team from Northern Natal finished in second place, while KwaZulu-Natal B1 finished in third place.
The A-Division teams all performed exceptionally well and the three teams from KwaZulu-Natal stamped their authority in the section from the very first day. The A2-team won the division, while the A3-team finished Runners-up in the section. The team from Gauteng North finished in third place overall.
In the Premier Division, the competition was even stronger and a number of the teams had current and former national champions in their teams. There was very little to separate the top teams and it came down to the last couple of matches to decide the positions in the section. Our Premier Division team performed exceptionally well, but a couple of narrow losses dropped them to third place overall. The hosts, KwaZulu-Natal ended up claiming the trophy, while the team from Cape Winelands finished in second place.
The South African Pairs, Billiards and Classic Championships were also played at the same time and these matches were played in between all the Interprovincial games. As a result, the schedule was extremely full and towards the end of the week there were a number of very tired players in the snooker room.
In the SA Pairs event, our very own Rafik Limbada and Elvin Harris lost in the Semi finals, but it was Munier Cassim & Mutalieb Allie who booked a place in the Finals against Vincent Halliday and Latchman Moodley. We saw some brilliant safety and a fine display of potting skills during the final and the match saw moments of brilliance from all four players. In the end, however, it was Munier Cassim & Mutalieb Allie who were just too strong and successfully defended the title they won last year as well.
The Billiards event saw fewer entries this year compared to last year and after the round-robins and a few closely contested knockout events, it was Munier Cassim and Mark McGillewie who contested the Final. Munier, a former SA Billiards champion, displayed some of the class and skill that earned him this title in the past as he clinched the title and lifted the most beautiful trophy in the game at present.
In the SA Classic event, a very strong field was whittled down till eventually just Mutalieb Allie and our own Rafik Limbada remained. We also saw brilliant performances from Elvin Harris and Munier Cassim, who lost to these two finalists respectively. Rafik had had an exceptional tournament and was playing excellent snooker, but it was Mutalieb Allie who was just too strong on the day and retained the title he won in 2018.
Congratulations have to go to all our players for their excellent performances, as well as their impeccable appearances and sportsmanlike conduct throughout the tournament. You have done Central Gauteng and Wanderers Snooker proud. Thanks also go to the KwaZulu-Natal Snooker Association and its committee for all the hard work that went into hosting these events and for providing an awesome venue and facilities.
With the SA Inter-Provincial championships behind us, all that remains is to complete our League season and finish the last couple of tournaments that remain. The Central Gauteng Snooker Association Singles will take place from the 30th of September and I look forward to bringing you results from this event in the next article.
Yours in Snooker
