It is with great sadness that I have to start off this month’s article with yet more devastating news that another one of our close friends and a fellow snooker player, Victor Pieterse, has passed away on the 22nd of November at the age of 57.
Victor was a long-standing member of CGSA and the Wanderers Snooker section and an extremely enthusiastic Snooker player. He was an extremely dedicated and committed member of the Central Gauteng Snooker Association and always supported Central Gauteng in everything the association endeavoured to achieve.
He was a regular supporter of all the snooker events hosted in the region and at the club and he represented CGSA at numerous provincial events throughout his 30 years as a provincial player. In all my years of playing Snooker, I have yet to come across another player as friendly and kind-hearted as Victor; both on and off the table. He was indeed a true gentleman of the game of Snooker and the only thing bigger than his big old soft heart was the huge smile that he always wore on his face.
Victor’s passing has left a huge void in this association, but the memories he has left behind will stay with all of us for an eternity. May he rest in peace and we trust that he will always smile down upon us.
We also received tragic news about the passing of another former CGSA member, Jonathan Scott. Sadly Jonathan passed away on the 25th of November after losing the battle against an infection, subsequent to his heart surgery. Jonathan was another gentleman of Snooker and he also worked his way up the rankings in CGSA before he moved to Gauteng North, where he played in recent years.
We would like to offer our sincere condolences and deepest sympathies to the family and friends of these two players and friends and we will keep them in our thoughts and prayers during these trying times.
The annual East Coast Cup was played from 8 – 10 November at Q-Masters Snooker Center in Montclair, Durban. The event is contested between 10-man teams from Central Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. This year Central Gauteng’s team consisted of the following players:
Our players came out firing and immediately opened up a significant lead on the team from Natal. After the first day, they had taken a commanding 18 frame lead and they weren’t about to let the opponents back in. Halfway through the second day it was all done and dusted with our team winning by 34 frames. They did not even play the final session of the day, as they had an unassailable lead. Well done to all our players on yet another superb performance and for retaining the trophy again this year.
The 2019 CGSA Awards Evening took place on Saturday 23 November 2019 at the Wanderers Club. CGSA honoured the achievements of its players throughout the season at both provincial and national level and everybody relished to the opportunity to celebrate the successes of the players along with their family and friends.
Well done to Central Gauteng and Wanderers Snooker for putting up another hugely successful event to round off another season filled with exceptional performances from our players.
Yours in Snooker
