It is with great sadness that I have to start off this month’s article with the devastating news that our friend and fellow snooker player, Martyn Daniels, has passed away on the 18th of May at the age of 59.

Martyn Daniels 13 May 1960 – 18 May 2019

Martyn was a long-standing member of CGSA and the Wanderers Snooker section and an extremely enthusiastic player. He was also an extremely dedicated and committed member of the Central Gauteng Snooker Association and tirelessly worked to help make a success of everything the association tackled. He was a regular supporter of all the snooker events hosted in the region and at the club and he represented CGSA at numerous provincial events. In all my years of playing Snooker, I have seldom come across another player as sincere and genuine as Martyn; both on and off the table. Win or lose, he never had anything but kind words and praise for his opponents and he was a true gentleman of the game of Snooker.

His friendly demeanour and competitiveness will be sorely missed by his fellow players and we will treasure all the wonderful memories he has left behind. Our sincerest condolences and deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends and we wish them strength through these trying times.

The 2019 Gauteng Masters Snooker Singles Championships took place on the weekend of 25-26 May. There was some tremendous potting on the tight tables at Wanderers Snooker Club and there were some exciting, closely contested matches all weekend. In the end, it was our very own Rafique Limbada and Elvin Harris who made it through to the finals. The final saw some excellent Snooker and Elvin produced an amazing clearance to remain in contention, but Rafique was just too strong and ended up winning the match to claim the title for 2019. Well done to both finalists for a great display of Snooker.

The 2019 SA Singles Snooker and 6 Reds Championships will be played in Durban from 6-15 June 2019. CGSA have entered several players in both events and I am looking forward to bringing you news and results from these events in the next article.
