The South African 6 Red Championships and the South African Open Snooker Championships were played here at The Wanderers Club from 4-13 May. In order to accommodate some of our players who were going to Tunisia to represent the country at the All African Championships, the SA Singles Championship was played before the 6 Reds event this year.
The field was extremely competitive this year and we saw a number of surprises during the round-robin section of the draw. Central Gauteng did exceptionally well though, with no less than 12 players qualifying for the knock-out section of the draw. Only two players, Fakhrie Gierdien and Ryan George, managed to get through to the Quarter Finals, where they both narrowly lost out to some very tough competitors.
It was, however, two other young players from the Gauteng region who managed to fight their way to the final, taking out some very strong competitors and former champions along the way. Richard Halliday and Kiashan Moodley played in the final and showcased some amazing potting ability and skill. A number of frames went down to the wire, but in the end it was Richard Halliday who raised the trophy. Having won both the SA Billiards and the SA 6 Reds Titles before, he now has the SA Singles title to add to his long list of achievements and he is only 27 years old.
Well done on a brilliant performance by both these young stars and it certainly looks like the future of Snooker in this country is in safe young hands.
In the SA Plate Event, it was Thabo Taljaard and Luther Killian who made it to the final, where Thabo ran out victor with a very strong performance. Well done to these two players on reaching the final of this national event.
In the SA 6 Reds Championships, Central Gauteng and Wanderers were again very well represented and it was Ryan George who made it to yet another Quarter Finals match, rounding off a very strong performance for the year thus far. In the Quarters he put up a brave fight, but it was former SA Champion, Francois Ellis who managed to win the match and eventually progressed to the Final.
In the final Francois came up against former SA 6 Reds Champion, Mutalieb Allie, who had also taken out some strong opponents on his way to the final. Mutalieb displayed some remarkable potting skills as he raced to a commanding lead early on. Francois managed to claw back a few frames, but it was Mutalieb who was simply too strong on the day, winning the final 7-3 to claim the title of South African 6 Reds Champion for 2017. After a surprise early exit from the Main event, the Plate event saw Kiashan Moodley taking on Bradley Richards. Bradley played very well, but Kiashan was just too strong and ended up lifting the 6 Reds Plate title for the first time in his career.
Well done and congratulations to all the participants in the two events this year. Central Gauteng and Wanderers Club are extremely proud to have hosted these events and we would like to thank Wanderers Club for their continued support to the Sport of Snooker.
That is all for a very busy month of May, but I will be bringing you more news as the Central Gauteng league season continues, following the break for the SA’s. It promises to be another extremely competitive season in CGSA.
Yours in Snooker
