The Gauteng Snooker Association season was kicked off with the annual Jannie Smuts Committee tournament on 17 February 2018, where teams made up of committee members from the various GSA provinces, compete for the title. Central Gauteng has a very proud history of exceptional performances at this event, but this year it was Tshwane Snooker (Northerns) who ended up winners of the Jannie Smuts Cup for 2018, while Central Gauteng were runners-up. Well done guys on another solid performance.
The Central Gauteng Snooker Association League fixtures started in early March with 24 teams and a lot of new faces. There is a lot of snooker to be played in the season and lots of very strong teams will all be fighting it out to try and claim the title of League Champions, but we started the season off with the “2018 Johannesburg & Districts” tournament which was played from the 26th of February 2018. From the round robin matches it was already clear that this season will produce some great competitive snooker and we saw some very closely contested matches. It was the knockout section, however, that produced a few upsets, making for a very interesting tournament.
In the quarter finals Rafique Limbada had to pull out all the stops, beating Mike Hines 4-2, while Deon Moodley played very consistent snooker to set up a semifinal clash between the two of them. In the other half it was Elvin Harris who set up a semifinal clash with Shivan Pillay, who was also playing snooker of a very high standard. The semifinals produced some good snooker and at the end of the day it was Rafique Limbada and Elvin Harris who proceeded to the final.
Elvin put up a brave fight, but in the end, it was the insane potting skill of Rafique Limbada, that saw him taking the title in his first event back in Central Gauteng, beating Elvin 5-2. In the Plate event, it was Yougash Pillay who was just a bit too strong on the day and beat Faraad James 3-0 to claim the title in the Plate event. Congratulations to all of you.
The 2018 Gauteng Masters event took place over the weekend of 17-18 March at The Matchroom in Benoni. The event, which consists of players from across the Gauteng region, saw a lot of old faces return to the Sport and perform exceptionally well. The tournament was a resounding success, with Rafique Limbada and Munier Cassim working their way to the final. Both players displayed excellent potting abilities and a fantastic game of snooker and it was Munier Cassim who ended up narrowly defeating Rafique Limbada to claim the title.
Ryan George scooped up the Plate title by beating Andre Du Toit and Rafique clinched the highest break prize with a sublime 73. Well done guys and if this is anything to go by, we are going to have a very competitive season.
I am looking forward to bringing you more news in the next article and some updated league results.
