UGB Masters – Durban

Over 400 snooker players country wide participated in mini qualifiers to reach the last 16 knockouts stages of the UGB Masters held in Durban in the 19 & 20 February 2022.

Fakhrie Gierdien making a good break to the final by beating Kiashen Moodley 5-0 in the semi-finals and Charl Jonck beating David Anderson to set up a repeat of the last Pro Snooker Tournament played at Gold Reef City in December.

However it was Charl Jonck became the UGB Masters Champion for a second time by beating Fakhrie Gierdien 5-4 in the final. Fakhrie having taken a strong lead of 4-2, only to have Charl win the next three frames and make the final a repeat of the Gold Reef Snooker Championship final.

Wanderers Club has two players now in the Pro-Snooker Top 8, Fakhrie Gierdien No 2 Seed and Rafique Limbada No 8 Seed.

Local Snooker

Central Gauteng Snooker Association start their League season in March. At the time of the newsletter being published the Johannesburg and Districts Snooker Championships has officially kicked off the League season. A Full cover will be done on the JHB and Districts Championships in the next newsletter.

International News

The 2022 World Games Qualifiers are being held in Doha Qatar from 06-12 March. SA Masters Champion Rafique Limbada, who plays from The Wanderers Club, and Gauteng North Snooker Champion Richard Halliday, will represent South Africa. The winner of the African Qualifiers will then represent the African Continent at the 2022 World Games to be held in the USA in July.
