wanderers club Long Standing Chairman Steps Down 1

The new badminton committee

“Yes I have been in badminton a long time but enjoyed every moment of it,” said the outgoing Wanderers Badminton Chairman (from 1985/6 until October 2018) who was awarded Life Membership by Southerns Badminton and is the holder of an honours tie at Wanderers.

He joined the Wanderers Club aged 8 and progressed through the badminton ranks to play premier league for Wanderers and captain the SA Universities team in the prestige Melville Cup. He represented Southerns (formerly Southern Transvaal) at all age groups from Under 14 to Golden Eagles and was selected for the South African Silver Eagles team.

The Badminton section moves forward under the Chairmanship of Dave Calvert and his Committee.

RECENT SUCCESS

Wanderers players performed well on “the large stage” recently when they competed at the SA Senior Championships in Pretoria in October.

Tashlin Hamid achieved an 8th grading in the A section (directly competing against current national players). Matthew Michel was ranked 9th nationally. Matthew Michel and doubles partner Andile Zuma are currently in the Emerging Players Senior squad following their successful year in the doubles discipline.

ACHIEVEMENTS BY JUNIOR PLAYERS

Keaton Stansfield has been selected for inclusion in the Under 19 Emerging Players Squad and  Christi Moodley retains her place in the under 19 National Squad, narrowly missing out on the team selection to attend the World Junior Championships.

MOVING FORWARD

National Junior Coach, David Calvert, will be accompanying the SA National Under 19 Protea Badminton Team as coach/ manager, to compete in the World Junior Championships to be held in Toronto, Canada in November.

Good wishes go with them as they compete with 45 teams from around the world, aiming to improve on last year’s finishing ranking of 32.
