The hockey section would all like to thank Wendy Cooke for many years of dedication and loyalty to the club as an administrator, coach, selector, umpire and player. Wendy has contributed to all spheres of the sport from a school level to an international level and has been a true servant to hockey. All the years of hard work, dedication and energy she has put into the section across all levels and disciplines. She has been the backbone of Wanderers hockey for many years and we wish her well in her retirement, although we can be sure we will still see her beside the astro for many years to come.

The senior section started off the season with Open Day on Saturday 16 Feb, a day of inter-team hockey games, which not even the rain could dampen.

The trials process kicked off soon after that with the teams being announced in early March – well done for all the players for being chosen to represent our club.

The senior section’s winter league starts this weekend 30/31 March and there is a lot of excitement across the teams as to what the season holds.

On the weekend of 2-4 May the club will be hosting the qualifiers to the prestigious Belgotex Elite club challenge. The tournament takes place each year in July at Riverside Sports in Durban North and is the only national, non-tertiary, inter-club hockey tournament on the SA hockey circuit which continues to deliver exceptional hockey displays and a fun weekend outdoors with good music, food and family entertainment. South Africa’s top club men and women’s hockey teams, including national and provincial players from KZN, Gauteng and Western Province, battle it out for the prize money and the title of the Belgotex Elite Club Challenge Winners.

If you are a company/individual that is interested in partnering with us to help develop this great sport though the qualifiers and beyond, please get in touch with the Lorcan Nurse ([email protected]). This is the first time a qualifying weekend will take place and presents an excellent opportunity for you to have your name/company associated with it.

The junior section took part in an inter-club friendly day at Beaulieu hockey club, on Thursday 21 March and it was a great day of fun for all.

The teams did very well managing to win all their games across the age groups, except one which was a close 1-0 loss. Well done everyone!

The junior section partakes in tournaments throughout the season which usually start in May, Wanders will be hosting one on Saturday 18 May, come down to support the club’s teams and help the section’s fundraising efforts we will have on the day.

Lastly congratulations to the many players across the section that have been chosen to represent Southern Gauteng and districts at the various levels this season. We know you will do us proud!
