Inspiring Those Who Aspire To Be

As we come to the end of March, the regular season is drawing to a close. It has been a difficult one in many respects, with the inconsistent availability of players leading to indifferent performances on the field. In particular, we have missed many of our schoolboys due the vagaries of this season’s provincial trial system and the school cricket calendar.

The men’s Premier League team were able to pull themselves out of the relegation zone only after back-to-back bonus point wins in the last two games of the season. They eventually finished 8th in the 12-team league – just behind our great rivals Old Edwardians. A relief for all of us at the club.

We are currently waiting for confirmation that our women have successfully defended their Premier League title. It would be a great achievement for the club and all involved.

The junior section continues to grow and bodes well for the future of the club. Boys and girls are drawn to the club thanks to our facilities and the structured coaching on offer. Our product is pulling juniors from other clubs and schools that we not necessarily on our radar before. Thanks to Graham, Craig, Ben and the other junior coaches for all their efforts.

Our over 40 cricketers participated in the veterans’ league that took place mid-week during the season under floodlights on the Top Oval. The league is set to grow, with players attracted by the camaraderie and spirit of veterans’ cricket. The introduction of veterans’ cricket to the club has been a great success, with some of the players now also playing regular cricket, which gives them the chance to share knowledge and experience with younger players.

The season doesn’t necessarily end here. A new initiative of the Lions Cricket Board, the Jozi Cup, will see cricket played until mid-June. Details are still being finalised, but all cricketers will be involved – men, women, juniors and veterans.
