Welcome to the September edition of the newsletter.
As I write to you all the first decent rains have fallen over Johannesburg. The past month has seen a change from some bitterly cold weather to some extremely hot weather. Last Saturday at TABS it was 31degrees Celsius and we were dying to go upstairs for a drink to cool down. Over the month we have changed from brown and grey trees and grass to wonderful green and now that the rain has eventually quenched the ground, some of the remaining trees and fields are about to come alive.
With this warmer weather, the lower COVID levels and the fact that most members have been vaccinated have come more bowlers, both to TABS, events and functions. Last night the COVID alert level was reduced to 1 and so whilst we still take the necessary precautions there should be no holding back from play.
In reverse order – We had an excellent turnout of 32 people at the Heritage Day Breakfast and Power Bowls. Phil Brest won first prize with 34 points and six other prizes from the 50/50 and lucky dray were handed out. A most enjoyable morning and it just shows what a fantastic family of bowlers we have.
For those bowlers who haven’t ventured out for the last 18 months- it’s time to get back! Please come and re-join your friends. We have also made sure that those who wish to play fewer ends can play together until they wish to re-join the mainstream bowlers. In addition on Sunday mornings a tea will be served again for those who wish to partake.
The Men’s Open Singles title was fought for in an excellent display of bowls by both Stan Sandler (at 90 years of age) and Duanne Abrahams where Stan came out the victor. A wonderful tribute to a lifelong list of titles and runner’s up titles since 1984. An excellent article was published in the Gazette local newspaper.
A number of folk played in the Gauteng pairs, mixed pairs and singles. The best performer here was Richard Haupt who reached the last 32 in singles – well done Richard.
League and various other JBA competitions such as league (mens and mixed) will be coming up early next year and names can be entered on the notice board soon. Two teams have entered Wednesday afternoon League that starts on 27 October.
We have been enjoying after TABS drinks on the deck at Chariots and we now also have some comfy lounge chairs in Bowlers A.
A notification will go out soon regarding the Bowls AGM which will be held on Saturday 23 October 2021 in Bowlers B. Tea and cake will be served. Thereafter TABS will commence.
You will have noticed quite a lot of work is happening on the greens. Fertilisation and various weed and insect control is being applied with a levelling/dressing going onto greens C and D. Our aim is to slowly ensure that we get upgraded over time.
Looking forward to seeing more folk at TABS now,
