We will start off with the good news. Bobby Donnelly is playing in the semi-finals, singles, of the 2017 Gauteng Men’s Open Championship on the 22 July. This is a great achievement and we can only wish him well. It would be fantastic if he were to win, however, even having reached the semi-finals is huge.
Duanne Abrahams/Greg Burns reached the quarter finals of the Gauteng Pairs. They lost in a tight game and have had a tremendous run this year.
In the Gauteng Ladies Fours, Ruth Skuy, Pessel Gelman, Rose Wookey and Di Binns won their section and made it into the last 16. Well done to all!
The new proposed format for the JBA 2017/2018 Men and Ladies leagues has been discussed at two meetings at the Club. It was a little disappointing that the turnout was so low on each occasion. Thank you to those whose attendance at the JBA proposals was noted. The winner of the Wanderers Men’s Open singles for 2017 is Duanne Abrahams who beat Mike Bolel in a close final. The Men’s Senior Champion is Ronnie Herrmann who beat Phil Lazarus in the Final. Duanne and Ronnie will represent Wanderers in the Champion of Champions Play-offs.
The Ladies Competition is well advanced and is still being played under the supervision of Rose Wookey.
Paul Botha is excelling in his organisation of the Men’s competition with the Selected Pairs, and Drawn Pairs, still to be completed. Mixed Pairs will be played off shortly.
The Annual Inter Club Quadrangular is being played on Sunday 6 August. This year Wanderers are the hosts with Brian Myers the Convenor. Janis Fluxman will supervise the Catering for the 96 players taking part. Competing Clubs are Killarney, Old Edwardians, Wingate Park [Pretoria] and Wanderers. Killarney are defending the trophy. Price for Morning Tea, mid=morning tea, lunch and snacks after the third game is R 135 per head.
Adrian Schofield hosted the 8 club Skollies Round Robin at Wanderers and Rob Watson reports that everything went off well with all players enjoying their after game snacks!!
Rose Wookey is organising her famous Lefties Day on Wednesday the 9 August – TABS in by 08.40. It was exciting for all last time out. The name originates from the fact that the winning team from each 6 end game moves on to the left. Losers stay behind. Many games are played in this format. Bring and Braai thereafter or a boerewors roll for R 25 purchased from Rose. Please advise Rose of your attendance prior to the time.
Stan Friedman and Sid Lazarus are slowly recovering from their operations and we wish them both well and a quick recovery.
