It is tempting to say that The Wanderers Club has some rising badminton stars but in fact, the young people in question have already made a name for themselves. Well done to all who participated in the Under 9s, Under 11s and Under 13s Open and Interprovincial tournament held in eThekwini (formerly Durban).

Three players are congratulated for outstanding success. Zeming Chen claimed 3 South African titles: – having won the men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles with partner Chloe Lai.

Chloe Lai also achieved 3 national titles: – in addition to her win in the mixed doubles, she won the ladies’ singles and the women’s doubles with her partner Jessica Howson.

Notably, both these players were graded 1st.

Mention is made with pride of 7-year-old William Wan. He now has his first national title and was graded 1st in the Under 9s section.

He was the winner in the men’s doubles and the runner-up in the Under 9 singles. Most notably – at the age of 7 – he and his partner were runners-up in the Under 11’s men’s doubles.

Southern Gauteng won the Interprovincial section.

Appreciation is expressed to coaches David Calvert and Les Brazier.

On a lighter note, senior badminton players participated in an event on the bowling green. The Wanderers senior players were the winners beating the Hockey and Cricket sides. It was a lot of fun as well as some serious bowling. Appreciation is expressed to the bowls section for the invitation, for organising and for encouraging others to try the sport.

Please note re membership. The senior badminton section has closed for membership as we have reached capacity. There are still openings for junior players to register and become members.
