April Snooker Update

Inspiring Those Who Aspire To Be

The Central Gauteng Snooker Association League fixtures are running smoothly and the season looks as though it may produce some interesting results, since a number of the newer teams are doing very well so far. Fakhrie Gierdien has taken the early lead in the individual standings, having not dropped a single frame to date, but the competition is very tough this year and there are still a number of players that are in contention at this stage.

The Ken Shaw Open Championships was played at Wanderers during April, with the finals happening on the 22nd of April 2017. Over the last number of years this premier event on the Highveld Region Snooker calendar has been dominated by our own Fakhrie Gierdien. This year proved to be the exception though and after some tough matches it was Munier Cassim and Kiashan Moodley who met in the final match. Our very own Elvin Harris and Fakhrie Gierdien narrowly lost 3-4 in the Semifinals to Munier and Kiashan respectively. The final was a closely contested affair, but it was Kiashan Moodley who ended up beating Munier Cassim 5-4.

Well done to all the players who took part in the event and congratulations to the winners on a fine performance.

Central Gauteng and the Wanderers Club are proud to yet again be playing host to the South African Snooker Singles and 6 Red Championships this year and the events will take place from 4-13 May. The field will be packed with most of the top players from around the country, with Central Gauteng and Wanderers having no less than 25 of the entries this year. Unfortunately the Snooker Room will be closed for play to social members during this period, but I once again urge anybody who is interested to come and watch some of the fantastic snooker played by our top players throughout these events.

I look forward to bringing you the up-to-date results and news on this and other events in the next article.

Yours in Snooker
